Local available potential energy: what is it and why we need it

Image
By: Prof. Remi Tailleux   As is well known, atmospheric winds and ocean currents ultimately derive their energy from the Sun. In general, this involves a two-step process, whereby the solar energy is first transformed into potential energy (PE) before finding its way into kinetic energy (KE). Some aspects of this transformation remain mysterious and poorly understood, however, which are to do with the so-called `cooling paradox’. In the oceans, cooling at high latitudes creates dense waters that sink and give rise to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The puzzle here is that the cooling decreases the PE of the oceans. How then can it be converted into KE?    The cooling paradox has been a recurring source of confusion and controversies in energetic studies of the atmosphere and oceans, so much so that one of the most famous textbooks on buoyancy-driven flows (Turner, 1973) stays away from energetics altogether. It is only with the work of Lorenz ...

The Best PS5 Games Coming In January 2024

As Christmas – and, indeed, 2023 – recede into the distance, it’s time to start looking ahead to January 2024 and the beginning of a brand new year. Traditionally, January isn’t the most exciting month for game releases; often, games that launch in January tend to be more niche or independent fare, with few triple-A releases landing in this month. January 2024 is pretty scant as far as PS5 games go, but there are still a few games with which you can have some fun if you’ve got a PS5, so don’t despair if you’ve already run out of games to play in the post-Christmas period. Here are the best PS5 games heading your way in January 2024. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (January 18th) While many gamers may have grown up with the impression that Prince of Persia is a 3D series, the fact is that the franchise actually got its start as a 2D cinematic platformer. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will return to something approaching that gameplay style, although naturally, it’ll be sli...

Apple yesterday returned to being the most valuable company in the world, after a new record high saw the company valued at $3.62T. AAPL stock jumped 2.5% in just one day after Morgan Stanley pointed to the company’s AI work, and named it a ‘top pick’ … The title of the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization changes from time to time, depending on the relative stock prices of the various contenders. Winners at any given point have included Apple, Aramco, Exxon Mobil, and Microsoft. Microsoft took the lead back in January, riding high on its AI credentials – and it’s now this same reasoning Morgan Stanley has given for its AAPL pick. Reuters reports. Apple’s shares rose 2.5% to a record high on Monday after Morgan Stanley raised its price target on the iPhone maker’s shares and designated the stock as a “top pick,” citing the company’s AI efforts as a boost to device sales […] Apple’s shares, which have jumped nearly 20% this year, rose to $236.30, giving the...

Actionable AI — Whiteboard Friday

And what I always encourage beginners to experiment with is get a Proof of Concept. Just see if these different tools are capable of doing the thing that you want them to do. So for example, go straight to ChatGPT, go straight to Gemini, go straight to the source, get that Proof of Concept, and then we can start thinking about these higher-level integrations and tools. MidJourney, is slightly more technical, just because you have to be on Discord. But what gets really exciting is things like NotebookLM. This is a free tool by Google. You can upload a source of information or data, and you can query against that. So recently, I uploaded my “Large Language Model Guide,” and I created a glossary like that, right? (finger snapping) I created a quiz; you can create a study buddy for students. It’s really, really powerful. And then up from there are Platform Integrations. These are things like GPT for Sheets Plugin, so, so powerful. A student recently wanted to take product descriptions a...

Dennis McCann vs Ionut Baluta fight preview

Dennis McCann vs Ionut Baluta rematch takes place Saturday night on TNT Sports There’s unfinished business in the super-bantamweight division for current British champion Dennis McCann (15-0-1, 8KO) and WBC International Silver champion Ionut Baluta (16-4-1, 3KO). The familiar foes clash again this Saturday, July 27, in the co-main event at the 02 Arena alongside Joe Joyce vs Derek Chisora live on TNT Sports. This time, there’s even more at stake – in the form of the coveted European super-bantamweight belt. After first facing off in August 2023, the thrilling fight ended in an anti-climatic draw after Maidstone’s McCann suffered an horrendous cut following an accidental clash of heads in the seventh round. The contest continued up until the ninth, but the flow of blood from the Brit’s forehead could not be stemmed. Since then, the 23-year-old British prospect has bounced back strongly with a dominant points victory to win the Lonsdale belt against unbeaten contender Brad Str...

Capcom Made A That Doesn’t Belong In 2024 And It’s Fantastic

The world of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is meant to feel fantastical and from another time, but the game itself also feels like an anachronism. Something that shouldn’t exist in 2024. It’s not a sequel in a hit franchise. It’s not working in a popular genre. And it’s not pandering to an international audience. It’s just an excellent game , and it shows what’s possible when big publishers take a chance on something completely different. “We believe it is important to respond to the expectations of our users with new titles in [existing] series and remakes, but we also believe it is equally important to take on the challenge of creating something new,” the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, a more than 20-year veteran of Capcom, told Kotaku in a recent email interview . “ As a completely new title, we are taking on a number of challenges.” Path of the Goddess has you play as the sword-dancing warrior Soh, who must rally villagers and protect the Maiden Yoshiro on a trea...

Bridge helps Alaska town cope with climate change » Yale Climate Connections

Aleknagik is a small, remote community at the head of the Wood River on the banks of Lake Aleknagik in southwest Alaska. Most residents live on the lake’s north shore, which used to be inaccessible by regional roads. To get to the south shore and towns beyond, people crossed the water by boat in the summer. And in winter, they’d cross the frozen lake by snowmobile or ATV. But city administrator Kay Andrews says crossing by water can be treacherous. And as the climate warms, residents cannot depend on thick ice all winter long. Andrews: “We were once able to say, ‘OK, we know that we can cross our lake by Thanksgiving.’ … But today, we’re lucky if it freezes by Christmas to cross now.” So the city secured government funding to build a bridge across the river. It opened in 2015, and people can now travel safely year-round and connect to the regional road network. Andrews: “This bridge has really made a difference for our community.” Being more accessible, however, is not withou...
